A traditional collage can be defined as a picture made by placing and adhering items or objects, as in pieces of paper and photographs, onto a paper or similar surface. It can also be considered as a way of thinking out loud and an aesthetic exercise. It might also be described as a therapeutic act or playful activity of an involved mind. It is a foundation of the discipline of visual art making, equal to drawing in the sifting of ideas, information and matter; a form of sketching, drafting, or planning. Simply put, collage is like any other engrossing play; the happy accident of thought and things, which can become an end in itself
The selection of works on paper pulled from the flat files represents this activity over the last ten years or so. It pretty much characterizes the terrain of “collage” in the studio from Los Angeles to Brooklyn. These works usually “came to be” after a trip or project or between other activities, and in so doing help link up everything else produced, created, and indexed. This work might also be considered less formal or contrived than the project based work and, therefore, potentially more personal and intimate due to the casual character and style. I have decided to include these examples in “The Archives” in order to allow a glimpse into my methodology, and possibly another vista into the practice of my discipline.
